The boiler scrappage scheme in Ireland: €2,000 for scrapping an oil or gas boiler
From 6 October 2026, removing an oil or gas boiler from a house built before 2021 adds €2,000 to the SEAI heat pump grant. It is paid as part of the heat pump grant, not on its own, and it takes the maximum grant for a house to €14,500.
What the scheme is
The scheme was announced on 29 September 2026 and came into force with Budget 2027 on 6 October 2026. The government describes it as "fossil fuel boiler scrappage support of €2,000", introduced "to further promote the adoption of heat pump and other renewable heating systems" in houses built before 2021.
Two things follow from that wording. It is a grant for getting rid of an oil or gas boiler and switching to renewable heating, not a grant towards a new oil or gas boiler. And it is attached to the heat pump grant: SEAI applies it as an extra €2,000 on a heat pump application, so there is no separate scrappage form.
Who gets it
- Houses built before 2021 that are removing a fossil fuel boiler (oil or gas) as part of a heat pump installation under the SEAI grant.
- Anyone with a heat pump grant application already in progress. SEAI has confirmed that homeowners with an active application where the work is not yet complete, and those who have already submitted their declaration of works and are waiting to be paid, get the extra €2,000 automatically, with no action needed.
- The usual heat pump grant conditions still apply: the home was built and occupied before 2021, the installer is SEAI-registered, you have the grant offer before work starts, and a post-works BER is done. The grant page has the full list and the steps in order.
The announcement names houses, and the apartment grant maximum (€11,500) is published without a breakdown, so it is not clear from the sources whether apartments with a gas boiler qualify. Ask SEAI before you count on it.
What the heat pump grant is now
| Part | Amount | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Heat pump unit | €10,500 | All eligible houses |
| Central heating upgrade | up to €2,000 | Only where radiators or pipework need upgrading |
| Boiler scrappage | €2,000 | Oil or gas boiler removed; house built before 2021 |
| Maximum for a house | €14,500 |
The grant can never exceed the cost of the work.
What it does to your quote
SEAI's median installed cost for a semi-detached house was €16,741 in the first half of 2026. Before October the maximum grant was €12,500, leaving €4,241 to pay; with scrappage it is €2,241. For a mid-terrace house at the median of €16,000, the gap falls from €3,500 to €1,500.
Three practical points:
- A quote dated before October 2026 shows the old grant. If it says "after grant", ask which figure was used.
- The boiler removal has to be in the scope. If the quote does not say the old boiler (and the oil tank, if you have one) is being removed, ask for it in writing. Removal is also one of the six items on our quote checklist.
- It does not change whether the price is fair. The grant comes off whatever the installer charges, so a quote well above SEAI's median is still a quote well above the median. Compare the full price first, then take off the grant.
