How much does a heat pump cost in Ireland?
For a house, the typical installed price in 2026 is about €16,000 to €17,000 before grants. For an apartment it is about €9,000. Those are SEAI's own medians, from the costs contractors submitted when grants were paid. After the grant, a typical house pays somewhere between €2,000 and €4,500.
Typical installed cost by type of home
SEAI publishes the median cost of each grant-aided upgrade. These are the figures for heat pumps installed between January and June 2026.
| Home | SEAI median cost | Maximum grant | After maximum grant |
|---|---|---|---|
| Detached house or bungalow | €17,000 | €14,500 | €2,500 |
| Semi-detached or end of terrace | €16,741 | €14,500 | €2,241 |
| Mid-terrace house | €16,000 | €14,500 | €1,500 |
| Apartment | €9,025 | €11,500 | Grant capped at the cost of the work |
A median is the middle price: half of the jobs cost more and half cost less. Each job includes whatever that job needed, so one price may cover a new hot water cylinder and six radiators while another covers the heat pump alone. Treat the median as a guide to the market, not as the right price for your house.
The maximum grant for a house assumes you also qualify for the €2,000 central heating upgrade (only where radiators or pipework need replacing) and the €2,000 boiler scrappage grant. Without the radiator work the grant is €12,500, so the same median semi-detached job costs €4,241 after the grant. The full breakdown is on the SEAI grant page.
What the installation cost covers
A quote for an air to water heat pump usually covers some or all of these. The more of them it includes, the closer to the top of the range it will sit.
- The heat pump unit itself, sized in kilowatts to your home's heat loss. A bigger unit costs more, and an oversized one also costs more to run.
- A hot water cylinder. Heat pumps need a larger, well-insulated cylinder than a boiler does, and most retrofits replace the old one.
- Radiator upgrades. A heat pump runs at a lower flow temperature than a boiler, so some radiators need to be larger. This is the item that varies most between houses.
- Pipework and electrical work, including a dedicated supply for the heat pump.
- Controls: thermostats and the controller for the heat pump.
- Removing the old boiler, and the oil tank if you have one.
- Commissioning and the paperwork for the SEAI grant.
A quote that lists none of this is not cheaper. It is incomplete, and the extras arrive later. The quote checklist goes through what should be listed.
Why quotes vary so much
SEAI publishes the median but not the spread, so nobody can say exactly how wide "normal" is. Three things explain most of the variation between two quotes for similar houses:
- Scope. How many radiators are being changed, whether the cylinder is included, and whether the oil tank is being removed.
- The heat loss of the house. A poorly insulated house needs a bigger heat pump and bigger radiators. Homes built before 2007 may need insulation work first before SEAI will fund a heat pump (see the Heat Loss Indicator rule).
- The installer. Demand is high since the grant rose, and prices differ from one SEAI-registered contractor to the next for the same job. Three quotes is the normal advice, and it holds.
Our free check uses the median for your type of home and calls a quote fair up to 10% above it, high up to 30% above it, and very high beyond that. That is a rule of thumb, not a verdict on your installer; a quote that includes a lot of radiator work can be fairly priced and still land in the high band.
The price is only half of it
A heat pump that is cheap to install but expensive to run is a bad deal, and the running cost depends on your boiler, your tariff and your insulation more than on the brand of heat pump. The running costs page shows what a heat pump costs to run against oil and gas at 2026 prices, with worked examples.
